U.S. Trade Deficit Surges to Second Highest Level in History; Jobless Claims Climb by 15,000

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The U.S. trade deficit, propelled by a record foreign oil bill, surged to $54 billion in August, the second highest level in history. The politically sensitive deficit with China hit a new high as American retailers upped their orders for cell phones, toys and televisions. The Commerce Department said the August trade deficit in goods and services was 6.9 percent higher than a $50.5 billion imbalance in July. A small 0.1 percent rise in exports was dwarfed by a 2.5 percent jump in imports.

For the year, America's trade deficit is running at a record annual rate of $590 billion, 19 percent higher than the previous record, last year's $496.5 billion imbalance. Imports climbed 2.5 percent to a record $150.1 billion in August, reflecting a 12.2 percent jump in petroleum shipments, which rose to a record $15.6 billion last month.

It's worth remembering that Cheap Labor Conservatives fought social security tooth and nail, they wanted to prevent workers from organizing and for many years were against minimal standards for drinking water, air quality and food labelling. That little day in the life rundown is a graphic reminder of what Bush would do if he really had his way: Rollback a half century of progress to the days when old folks went to the county poorhouse and the minimum wage would be cut, not raised.
Compassionate Conservatism is classic propaganda in the Goebbels tradition.

<<...After his debate peformance, I'm no longer angry at Bush. I really just feel sorry for the guy. I think America does too. He was just in way over his head the last four years--from the beginning. I think they thought that a CEO President would do it and Cheney could run things from behind the scenes. But when the international situation changed so drastically, what was really needed was a stand-up, involved leader. For all his posturing (or because of it), Bush was just not that leader.

I don't think the sympathy vote will do it for him though. There's just an acknowledgement out there that he has not been good for the country. The best words for it are "Bush Fatigue." Everyone is just so tired of fighting about the guy that they are ready to set him aside. I agree with Kos. I like our chances. One things for sure. Its better to be on the momentum side of the ball than the other way round...>>
