Doris Kearns Goodwin watched the debate with 10 dem friends and she said they unanimously felt bush had won the debate so go figure. That first debate is the one that really hurt bush among independents and 2&3 helped kerry gain credibility as a challenger. I used to rail on bills thread that the republicans should have dumped cheney and gone with mccain or giuliani. McCain certainly would have taken it as he would have been shoe in if bush won and leading candidate even if bush lost. Same for rudy. OTher possibles were powell and pataki. Like bush last nite cheney kicked ass in his debate with televanglist "reeve will walk again" Edwards but the polls say no and thats because moderates and independents appear more scared of cheney than reassured. As i said to neocon i at this point think kerry will win. Rove will have 20 days to tear down kerry or find some dirt about his anti-vietnam years. But as i also said to neocon i am an easterner and if the polls are wrong as he claims, those religious pro-life, anti-gay marriage folks may yet come to the rescue. Are there more new voters of that stripe or young people. Who will actually vote? Thats why its impossible to predict at this point. mike
