OK. That makes sense but I doubt if the mainstreamers will see it that way.

I don't see what the label deprives Cheney's daughter of. The mainstream wants it reserved for people who couple up and have the heterosexual qualifications to procreate. Both candidates indicated their support and tolerance for people who want to live differing lifestyles, and in both cases they want people who qualify for the label to have a protected status.

There's kagillians of labels to pick from and the mainstream sees something mischievious about the demand of lesbians to use this one. Its 'special', they don't qualify.

Bottom line is that Kerry's comment did not come across as supporting lesbian marriages, it came across as a cheap shot.
