I have a cousin who's a volunteer air force jet pilot, a real one. He'll end up top brass because he's highly educated. You have some upper income people volunteering for various reasons. But by and large the military is the first rung of the ladder for young guys without any other way to get out of their small town or slum neighborhood. As for them being rightwing, that's not completely true. Soldiers are not supposed to be political at all. But the ones who are political are probably rightwing.
