I heard the voice, and the exact repeating of it by the president, but I tuned in late, and didn't see this incident.

In the very beginning of (before) that speech in France, there was suddenly a metallic plong-pling-pling sound, like dropping a "small screw" on a hard surface, the president looked startled and down, "picked up" something from the podium and then "poked (rubbed) his ear".

This sound was picked up by the microphone on the podium.

I assumed that something had happened that mixed up lines for simultaneous translation and the voice he was copying. That's very interesting. I've never looked anything up about this, since I heard it myself, in astonishment. Do you have a link to any references to the dropped item, and the "rubbed" ear?
