Education is a public good. There is a long history of economic analysis. Everyone benefits when the populous is better educated. Activities build character. This benefits society. A rising tide raises all ships.

Does your reward equal your cost? Unlikely. It may well exceed it. In the case of the expanding government education bureaucracy, it makes it more difficult to get increased benefits.

That is the brilliance behind President Bush's seemingly elusive answer in the last debate. He said we need better educated youth, and that would take care of low wages.
