Pollyanna, that's not being cynical it's being realistic. People spend 99% of their time thinking about themselves. It's not wrong, it's the way we're built. That does not mean we have to act badly towards each other, that's what the tempering influence of civilization is ALL ABOUT. I expect people to act in a self-interested manner so I want the rules, regulations, punishments, light-of-day to temper WHAT THEY DO. That's realistic. I do not waste my time hoping and wishing that saintly people (who do not exist and never have) will take care of me. That's servile and childish.
