You must have been watching another set of debates. I expected Bush to put on a good show. What I saw instead was a jaw dropper. We have seen very little of Bush over the last four years -- he is said to have given fewer press conferences than any other President in recent decades. When people actually see Bush live and in action, the shortcomings become more glaringly obvious. The response in the polls is telling -- and what it is telling us is that your attempts to spin these debates as "victories" for Bush are laughable.

I found the debates between Gore and Bush harder to call.

In the end, people didn't vote for Gore because change didn't seem that big a deal, and they did not like his crooked teeth.

The stakes are far higher now, and change may be seen as an imperitave. Regardless of which side one is on, hopefully the importance which I perceive is felt more strongly than in the past will mean increased voter participation.
