"not wanting to inflate his ego unduly"

You are far too smart and good to give falsity, so I fear not! The word "ego" is used in many ways. I generally use it as a general sense of SELF apart from judgements. In other words, I consider a healthy ego as that sense of self which is honestly owned by a person and which is constrained by a discreet rationality. You really cannot inflate the ego of such a person.

Egotism is another matter. It is not informed by the honest respect of others. rather, it is a character flaw and a sign of emotional dissonance with society and nature.
