Elizabeth Edwards Makes Things Worse American Mind blog John Edwards' wife, Elizabeth, decided to play pop psychologist by saying Lynne Cheney "overreacted to this and treated it as if it's shameful to have this discussion. I think that's a very sad state of affairs. ... I think that it indicates a certain degree of shame with respect to her daughter's sexual preferences. ... It makes me really sad that that's Lynne's response." Imagine what Mrs. Edwards would have said had President Bush used her daughter as an example in favor of abstinence-based sex education. I have to make this clear because people like Oliver Willis have a hard time understanding my posts. I don't know anything about Cate Edwards' sex life, and I don't want to. It's none of my business, and it would be wrong if Bush had invoked her name. Remember Democrats were screaming during the Clinton impeachment that digging into someone's private sex life for political gain was wrong. For them it's only wrong if Republicans are doing it. Kerry invoking Mary Cheney is one example, and Illinois media's successful attack on Jack Ryan is another. There's been an unwritten rule that candidates' children are off limits. Kerry Edwards has decided all rules are made to be broken in order to achieve victory. It may work, but by doing so he will have failed to bring the nation together.
