My wife was more sure than I was that Kerry was trounced. I only think he was trounced in the last debate, I think Bush had the edge in the first two.

Did Bush "clearly" win all three debates? I thought he had won until some called them draws, or gave Kerry the edge, then I found myself confused, since I was trying to imagine how they would effect the crucial undecided vote, not how much I agreed with Bush personally, or found Kerry irritating.

I could see calling the first one a draw, and maybe giving the edge to Kerry, depending on how one reacted to Bush's frazzle. I could see calling the second one a virtual draw with a tilt towards Bush. But when people started calling the third one a draw, when it was a decisive Bush win, I knew something was wrong. People were trying to "score", as if it were a contest, instead of talking about settled impressions, and, in any case, some of those impressions would not be settled for several days.

On that basis, I think that Bush got the most out of all three debates, as details fade and the gist of the experience of watching them becomes salient. But it is speculative, so I will not claim that he clearly won, only that it seems clear to me.....
