OTOH, my 88 year old mother really objected to his remark, she didn't realize that Bush was pushing to change the constiution. Shrub's push is a complete change from the debates of 2000 so I think it's fair to discuss. I think the gist of it was to expose the bigoted position of the right, their main agenda is that being gay is a "choice." So why would Cheney's daughter choose to be gay? For someone is is a "uniter not a diver" Shrub has really managed to polarize people. Shrub is walking a thin line IMHO, Florida has its share of gays, certainly more than he "won" Florida by last time. Which makes me think that it's a risk he thinks he can afford to take--I strongly fear they will cheat in Florida. My whole family burst out laughing when Kerry mentioned Cheney's daughter because we think these republicans are a bunch of hypocrites, why can't they just admit gays are just part of society and leave it at that. Why do they try to moralize everything? In psychology I believe the word would be "splitting"--the right sees things in terms of black and white, good and "evil". In reality the world is much more complicated than that and Kerry did allude to that in the second debate. These social issue topics (gay marriage, abortion) are hot buttons and easily distorted. It certainly doesn't harm me or concern me what other people do and the republicans seem to want to control people's individual lives more than the democrats although they espouse to the opposite. However, Shrubs war-mongoring does have an effect on my life. I have an 18 year old son, he means more to me than anything, including a tax cut. The disturbing thing is why were these social issues repeated in two debates? Why weren't issues like the environment, foreign oil dependence, Cheney's secret energy meeting, etc mentioned at all?
