When Kerry responded to the last question of the debate, about the women in his life, after President Bush had expressed his profound love for Laura, Kerry made what may end up being the gaffe that sinks his presidential hopes. He answered about how all 3 (him, President, and Bob Schieffer) married up. And then he added, "And some would say maybe me moreso than others." While there was natural laughter in the auditorium, women across America were extremely offended. The first lady I heard call into a talk radio show (supposedly undecided until that point), said that she doesn't believe Kerry will be able to get any of the women vote (clearly exaggerated, of course), and that Kerry couldn't have appeared to be more of a disrespectful gigolo if he tried. She said all of her woman friends she had briefly conferred with felt the same way. President Bush was respectful, truly loving in his remarks about Laura; Kerry was disrespectful to his wife, never said he loved her, and was condescending to all, in his comment about how he married "up", financially, moreso than the other two. You watch --- this line may well sink Kerry, who desperately needs to hold on to every woman vote he can get (the lesbian remark about Cheney's daughter didn't help either).
