The picture that I get of Abraham is that he wasn't smart enough to scam Pharaoh. He was frightened and desperate and when his faith was tested and he failed the test he started lacking good judgement. The picture that the bible paints of him is not very complimentary.

Sara was really his half sister and according to what the definition of "is" "is" i.e.Bill Clintonish. That would not qualify as a lie but in God's eyes is was definitely a lie.

It was against the Egyptian law to take another man's wife. Pharaoh was considered a God so there was a lengthy process of sanctification before a woman would have had sexual relationships with Pharaoh. Hopefully it was during this time that Sara was rescued by God.

There is another cause in Genesis where barrenness was the result of this type of sin. The bible does state that there were multiple plagues brought on Pharaoh's household.

The reliance on Egypt or in other words the "world system" in times of trouble is a constant theme in the bible. The prophets on numerous occasions rebuked Israel for the reliance they would have on Egypt.

The call to invade the promise land was actually given first to Terah Abrams father however he settled in Haran or on the way to Caanan. The area was prosperous. The next generation took the charge more seriously. Terah could have just as easily been the father of many nations if he would have obeyed the lord.

The picture that I get of the financial condition of Abraham when he arrived in Egypt is that he was bankkrupt. The Lord used Pharaoh to bless him again and he returned to Caanan with all his goods and wealth that he had before..possibly more...

In Christ...Greg
