Chip gear maker Kulicke sees business trough in '05

HSINCHU, Taiwan, Oct 15 (Reuters) - U.S. microchip equipment maker Kulicke & Soffa Industries Inc. (KLIC.O: Quote, Profile, Research) expects its business to hit a trough in 2005 after shipments scaled a peak in the quarter from January to March, its chief executive said.
The maker of wirebonders, which help connect microchips to circuit boards, has been a leading indicator of peaks and troughs in the highly cyclical chip business and the current sector slowdown was more than a temporary pileup of unwanted inventory, CEO Scott Kulicke said.

"We believe we have seen a cyclical peak. In fact, we think we are getting remarkably close to a cyclical trough," Kulicke told Reuters in an interview on Friday.

"We'll hit a trough sometime in '05," if the current cycle follows the same pattern as historical ups and downs, he said.
