Zeuspaul,

The risk/reward calculation is one I am working on. Your thoughts echo many of mine. I may very well abandon the battery idea. The local system is pretty reliable and it is true that in one year, there are not that many hours of down-time. I understand though, that they are moving our local system to a larger grid in the near future and shutting down our local coal-fired plant. This is a development I do not like, because terrorists will have greater opportunity to disrupt us because there will be fewer power producers to strike. The grid is a nubile target for them, to say the least. Even with that said, I have yet to quantify the risk it poses to me personally. I'd be guessing, really.

Electricity is something we take for granted and have done so all of our lives, but the North American grid system is old and increasingly prone to unexpected failures even without terrorists. As for them, I don't think we will ever be rid of their threat.
