I've gone on record numerous times saying that RE has no "value add", it is a consumption and has no future productive return the way a direct investment in something like a capital asset would have.

That said, it's a natural response to want to put savings into those investments which are appreciating after losing large sums of money in the stock market. So far, they've been rewarded for those investments in their own houses. For many households, the house is their main form of savings. I've always encouraged people to not factor their house when planning for retirement, but I can hardly blame them for doing so since it has worked out so well for them.
