I think it very likely that Bush has solidified his base even more strongly in his "red" states, adding to his popular vote improvement. However, his slippage in the battleground states could be very real as well, but when netted against the national ratios, is somewhat buried. The national popular vote just isn't going to be that critical. If Bush wins 75% of Utah, for example...but only 49.5% of Ohio...well you get it.
