Bill Gates will pay much more than you whether the tax rate is "progressive" or not.

Of course there is a place for the public sector--- I am not a libertarian. The question is one of ambition: how much confidence do you have in the ability of government to solve problems, especially on the federal level, rather than tailored to local needs? And what things do you consider serious problems in the first place? I do not think, for example, that entitlements ought to exist. The real solution to the looming crises in Social Security and Medicare is to mothball them, and substitute means- tested programs to supplemnent the incomes of those who would otherwise fall into poverty. Affluent seniors should take care of their own retirement, and pay for their own insurance.
