Kerry and Edwards were trying to remind the people who frown on these things that Cheney has a lesbian daughter --- this is calculated to cost BC04 some votes.

A brilliant tactic perhaps, but leaves a nasty aftertaste. Note that when Edwards brought it up, Cheney only thanked him and made no further comment --- I think Cheney was furious inside, but did not want to bring his daughter into the debate. A standard "not worthy of comment so I won't respond to that cheap shot" reply.

At least Edwards said it to Cheney's face. Kerry said it without Cheney being there. According to a Newsweek article, many in the journalist box audibly gasped when Kerry said that line, so any thinking person understood what Kerry was really trying to do when he said it. Any post-debate talk about "god's children", "fair-game", "ashamed of their daughter" just makes the whole mess more and more tawdry.

Can we move on now?
