OT: I wouldn't think so Sam but I am no option expert so help us out anyone who might be please. The people on this thread might be helpful:

Subject 51101

Someone here might be helpful too. So lets recreate the trades.

First Sam bought 1000 shares of WDC at 8.49 back on 4/27/04.

Then on 4/28/04 he sold 10 October 10/04 covered calls at $75.00.

Message 20071185

WDC got close to 10 but never quite made it.

I believe Sam still owns 1000 shares of WDC right? The covered calls expired worthless.

Because you ran out of time your WDC covered calls never got to be in the money at ten. You still have a profit on your 1000 shares though so it's not all bad.

And the question is...Tax question: Anybody know whether sale of out-of-the-money covered call affects holding period of underlying stock position?

Selling covered calls does not affect holding period in any way. Your down-side risk in holding the stock was never suspended. And the short position in the calls is not an "offsetting position" to your long position.

Great trade, Sam. The turtle beats the wannabe-hare again!
