There is a huge difference between median and average net worth in the US, because of the very uneven wealth distribution. Check this Fed report on family finances in 2001:

federalreserve.gov

On page 7 you will see that the median household net worth is $86K, while the average (or mean) is $396K. Bill Gates' net worth is more than the total net worth of the bottom 40% of all Americans.
