We are consuming oil this year faster than previously thought. The International Energy Agency now forecasts that the world will consume 78.7 million barrels a day in the second quarter of this year, 400,000 barrels a day more than the agency's previous forecast, and 3.4% more than in the same quarter of 2003.

This demand surge has combined with supply-threatening political uncertainties, notably in the Middle East, to drive crude oil to prices not seen before.
