Perhaps it is now realized that British soldiers might succeed where US soldiers had failed, that they would exercise common sense, be more "sensitive" and not behave in the disgraceful way as the Americans did at Abu Ghraib.

It ought to be noted that when the Brits were colonial masters of Iraq in the 1930s and 1940s, their brand of diplomacy enabled them to get the Sunnis and Shi'ites to co-exist peacefully with each other.

Why did the Americans fail? I think it was because they mistakenly thought that ALL Iraqis were plain "morons" and folks who are beneath contempt and that striking FEAR and TERROR into their hearts and HUMILIATING them would force the Iraqis to submit and come to heel! Man O Man! Were the Americans ever mistaken. Result: disgrace not only for the perps but also for the top brass at the Pentagon and Dubya, to say nothing of the American people in general.

By the way, some Americans used fear, terror and humiliation to good effect in the Philippines in the late 1890s. During the American campaign there, a group of Moslem rebels were captured and all of them were killed except for one lone prisoner. The carcass of the rebel leader was cut open, his heart and entrails were pulled out. A pig was slaughtered and its blood was spilled on all the dead bodies. The pig was cut up and each dead rebel had a piece of pork shoved into his mouth. Then, at sundown which was considered by superstitious folks to be a most inauspicious time for burial, the dead were buried together with what was left over from the cutup pig. Then the lone prisoner was released to go tell his comrades elsewhere that the defilement had precluded the departed from enjoying their reward of 72 dark-eyed virgins each in Paradise.

But then was then, and now is now! What worked before failed big-time in Iraq. Hopefully the Brits might have better luck.
