As part of the "Year of France in China", world-famous aerobatic team the Patrouille de France will perform off the southern side of Hong Kong Island. "The coming aerobatic display will be the first large-scale display of its kind in Hong Kong," a government spokesman said yesterday. The team comes to Hong Kong after poor visibility forced the cancellation of its display over Beijing last week. But Civil Aviation Department senior officer Philip Lee, who was in Beijing for the cancelled event, said conditions in Hong Kong were expected to be favourable. He said the aerial stunts would "certainly be a very entertaining performance" for locals and tourists. The eight Alpha jets will perform loops, high-speed flyovers, close formations and low-level flyovers in diamond, T-shaped and heart-shaped formations. They will clock speeds of more than 600km/h and fly as low as 30 metres above the water. Most of the maneuvers will take place south of the headland outside Ocean Park but will start with a smoky flyby over Victoria Harbour in the colours of the French tricolour just after 2pm. Officials said traffic and crowd-control arrangements would be in place to assist viewing of the display from various locations, including Ocean Park and public beaches. Special plans will also be in place for sea, land and air traffic.
