I often felt unworthy (and maybe a little uncomfortable) of all the respect that was bestowed on me just because I was an American.

I'm uncomfortable with that deference, too. And even more uncomfortable with the many Americans who continue to think it's their due.

If recent polls are any indication, 60 to 80 percent of people in Northern European countries now view us unfavorably.

Probably fits in with the 60-80% of Americans view of France today.
