i don't think i would go that far.....

Whew! Thank heavens! I thought for a bit we might be setting up for homosexual executions at the local malls.

I think the point that must be made is that common sense and Christ's single commandment "Love one another." must be taken as the guiding rule in human relations.

Neither the Bible nor the US Constitution can or should be interpreted literally. Should homosexuals be put to death? Does the right to bear arms mean everyone can legally own a nuclear weapon? Of course not. Both examples are extreme, but illustrate why I worry when people quote the Bible or call for strict interpretation of the Constitution. Both documents must be read with a sense of history and perspective with the overriding goal of bettering the human condition.

Justice Scalia has opined that the Constitution is a "legal document, nothing more, nothing less". I disagree. The Constitution and our Declaration of Independence are much more than that, they are a reflection of our dreams and aspirations of freedom, equality and justice...

When I see George Bush advocating so many limits on our freedoms, from marriage to abortion to the Patriot Act... all in the name of "freedom" and "strict interpretation of our Constitution" I feel that our founding fathers must be sad, sad that we are the first generation to limit rather than expand upon course of human freedom that they so courageously charted some two centuries ago. Sad because George Bush wants to curtail freedom in the name of freedom... and so many are willing to follow this Pied Piper backwards...
