Henry, It's bizarre that elderly people are forced to wait in such long lines. At a minimum, where are their relatives or community volunteers that could wait in line for them?

Insurance should cover a flu shot, people should be able to order it in advance through their doctor, and they shouldn't have to go to a Walgreens or Safeway to get it. Even during non-shortage times, those lines can be too long for the elderly.

It's surprising that Silicon Valley clinics and hospitals made their entire order through one manufacturer. That sounds high risk.

Even manufacturers don't do this when ordering components - they distribute their risk and order from two vendors, meaning they nearly always have a second source supply.

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Seventy-year-old Homer Fink spent eight hours sitting next to a supermarket Halloween display for a flu shot that he wasn't able to get at five other places. The scene was repeated across the country as the nation's suddenly limited supply of flu vaccine was drained.

"I've had five bypasses and six stents in me now. I need the shot," said Fink, who got the third spot in line by arriving at 1 a.m. Friday for a clinic scheduled to start at 9 at the Kroger store. It was the last vaccination clinic in the area.

There really should be some type of volunteer organization that waits in line for the elderly people. A heart bypass victim should not be waiting in line at 1AM in the morning. He could get sick just from that.
