ADM is indeed heavily subsidized. I didn't know 43% of their profits came from subsidies but it doesn't shock me. I think such subsides are rarely justified. Even if sometimes there is some short term justification that makes sense (and I think this is usually not the case), the subsidy often becomes indefinite not just short term.

I didn't think of the government sugar programs as a subsidy to ADM but I guess in effect they are. The sugar programs are bad enough in themselves that if for some reason we had to give that much subsidy to ADM I'd rather the government just write ADM a check than have the sugar programs.
