I must admit that the principles of AA are suggestions, not rules laid down in concrete. I have heard of those who have stayed sober by simply believing in the power of the group, being able to admit that their combined sobriety is more powerful than any power that one person can muster. I'm sure that you probably have heard about the guy who stayed sober by believing that a doorknob was his higher power and he was able to stay sober until he was able to quit being so agnostically inclined and to look to s deeper spiritual life.

The thing is that most of us at that early sobriety have little faith, believing that God has in some way deserted us. The mindset at that time is simply that of a sick person who is still blaming others for his many problems.

Contrary to my beliefs, I must admit that there is a power, whom I choose to call God, that helps those who are to sick to help themselves without any formal surrender to Jesus Christ. I am thankful that God does work, even for the man who denies His existence.

If you are working the Twelfth step than I can understand what keeps you sober but I seek further enlightenment through meditation and prayer to the Triune God of my childhood.
