Ray, on one hand that is such a funny article and, on the other, so frightening.

So funny, it makes one feel at home.

>>some of the salutations: "communist bastard," "asshole," "a piece of trash, scum of the earth." <<

And this is so true, and even more amusing after what I have just posted to Darleen:

>>Bush’s supporters demand lock-step consensus that Bush is right. They regard truthful reports that Saddam Hussein had no weapons of mass destruction and was not involved in the September 11 attack on the US – truths now firmly established by the Bush administration’s own reports – as treasonous America-bashing.

Bush’s conservative supporters want no debate. They want no facts, no analysis.

.... today’s conservatives are driven by ideology, not by fact. He argues that their stock in trade is denunciation, not debate. Conservatives don’t assess opponents’ arguments, they demonize opponents. Truth and falsity are out of the picture; the criteria are: who’s good, who’s evil, who’s patriotic, who’s unpatriotic.

These are the traits of brownshirts. Brownshirts know they are right. They know their opponents are wrong and regard them as enemies who must be silenced if not exterminated. <<

Apropos the Niemoller quote, it is still quite fresh in my mind. Don't forget that it's not too many years since we, in South Africa, have been through a populist, democratic revolution against a fascist clique and I used to have that quote pinned to my wall. Unfortunately, the challenge which now faces the US appears to be even greater than the one which faced SA. In fact, I think the Second American Civil War will be a lot worse than the first, and that was bad enough.

Both for the intelligence of the commentary, and for the fact that I can find myself in such easy agreement with what are today labeled the "paleo-conservatives"[.]

Spectacular!

That being the case - and notwithstanding that you've previously described yourself as a socialist, a leftist, and a 'red'...

...I'm sure you'll agree with these paleoconservative/libertarian perspectives, as well!
