Some good points, Gus. Before the first Gulf War, bin Laden tried to persuade Saudi rulers to let him fight a Afghan style war against the Iraqi's occupying Kuwait, so deep was his hatred of the idea of American infidels on Saudi soil.

But in reality, American civilians have worked in Saudi Arabia since the 50's, so was it the military presence in the 90's that ticked off bin Laden? Or was it inevitable given his evolving hatred of things non-Islamic?

It goes from there. The "what if" tree grows exponentially.

Still, getting back to the original issue, given the facts of 9/11 I believe the tragedy could have been prevented had some common sense and basic security precautions been in place. It scares me that, rather than decentralizing our anti-terror efforts, we are moving towards centralizing them even more, further silencing the voices from the field who will be the first to pick up the warnings.
