a heavy drinker can have a mental addiction for many reasons, but that is cured through walking through the reasons and dealing with them. Alcohol over time has an affect on the body, so even a very heavy drinker who is not an alcoholic is going to have some physical effects. You can die from withdrawls, and that is not being an alcoholic, that is the body's dependence at that point. No very heavy drinker should quit cold turkey without supervision. However, the why of the alcoholic has not been discovered. But unlike the heavy or problem drinker, the alcoholic's body is affected by the introduction of alcohol in a way that alters them. And it does only take that one drink. A gene is something tha has been considered. And there is no cure. AA works wonders for millions. Some manage it alone. But the body's desire for alcohol after one has been a drinker is over-whelming. I've never known of an alcoholic who wasn't always tempted, who didn't always have thoughts of it, inspite of it meaning ruin. I think the Big Book can be an interesting read for anyone, especially anyone who knows someone in their life with a problem that might be that. What seems unfathomable to the non-alcoholic... like someone making a total ass of themselves over and over... throwing up at all the parties... losing their wife and house... k, they may not make sense after the reading, but their might be some understanding.

Does that make any sense? :) and how did we get from inate gayness to this? though I confess I prefer this topic. <g>
