But the point is that it's unrealistic to think that we can ever go back to the days when terrorism was just a nuisance.

Because when we told ourselves that terrorism was just a nuisance, we were not paying attention to what was really happening. We were living in a dream world.

Let's take a hypothetical. Let's suppose that you come from a small town where nobody ever locks their doors, and they don't lock their cars, and they even leave their keys in their ignitions. And then you move to Washington DC, and try to do the same thing.

And your car is stolen and your house is robbed.

Why can't you live like you did in your small town? It worked for you then but not anymore. Well, it's because your world is different. And you didn't notice, because you were living in a dream world.

Can you change Washington DC so it's safe, like the small town you came from? Not in your lifetime. Probably never.

So you adapt, or you die. But continuing your fantasy is not an option.
