I forgot to mention Bush the First's "No New Taxes" and the truncated reign that recent Big Lie produced. As for Orwell I don't have a lot of enthusiasm for proponents of secondary sources as Huxley might say.

The notion of Blair as being enthralled with the thriving British Empire is to over look the last 80 years of decline: and the view of Labour of the Days of Pomp and Circumstance; and the stance of the bosses of the British Labour Party to say nothing of the downtrodden members who are I fear unable to recall the fruits of the Empire except as their granddad's focus on devouring the remnants. America is the only expansive Empire now and for the last 50 years but probably not for the next.

Arguing the position that Blair and even Bush knew that they would be found as soon as they won the war isn't worth effort.
