Here's Dick Cheney using the "lipstick on a pig" metaphor about Kerry, also in Wyoming, just this past Friday.

"You saw John Kerry Wednesday night trying to back off that idea of a "global test." That notion fits with his whole career, but he doesn't want us to know about his whole career. He is trying to hide it, to cover it up by using a little tough talk during the course of this campaign. But you can't do that. It won't work. To use a phrase that we like in our home state of Wyoming, you can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig. (Applause.)"

<<<Putting lipstick on a pig" seems to me to be intelligible across cultures, provided you know what lipstick is and why it's worn and have some knowlegdge of pigs. On first hearing it, one would need to decipher it, but it's easily doable.

Oh, I've just read it and it does have tones of calling John Kerry a pig. Sure, the primary meaning was that he was trying to make a silk purse out of sow's ear, but there was an overlay of other implication suggesting that John Kerry with lipstick on would still be a pig and maybe a homosexual one at that, with his carefully coiffed hair and allegations of Botox >>>

With Kerry it would be closer to say 'putting lipstick on a moose'. But many cultures have never seen a moose close-up and therefore may not recognize it as an insult.

And a homosexual moose is something one should avoid at all costs. The terror of the tundra (g)

Mq, when you read Mrs. Cheney's bio, you will know if she intended to call Mr. Kerry a pig, she would have done so.

>>>>>>>>>Mrs. Cheney earned her Bachelor of Arts degree with highest honors from Colorado College, her Master of Arts from the University of Colorado, and her Ph.D. with a specialization in 19th century British literature from the University of Wisconsin. She is the recipient of awards and honorary degrees from numerous colleges and universities. <<<<<<<

Maurice, Don't take offense at this, but you need to know the languages spoken by Americans a bit better. Our country started out with the "King's English", but these days, there must be hundreds of languages, based on English, spoken in the country, that is spoken, depending on where one lives, or where one was raised up. Part of the difference is the incorporation of words from many other languages that, were either here before the English came, or came in the wave of immigration over the years. Our language has large doses of words from American Indians, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Irish, and many more.

I have heard a number of Aussies, and Kiwis, speak, and ya'll didn't exactly stay with the King's English either. :^)
