Great bird story! Also enjoyed the photos, some of which I've seen before.

We've had a goshawk nest at the back of our farm a few times over the years. My next door neighbour like to hike back there with her golden lab and has been chased by the hawk several times. The first time it ever happened, I guess the hawk had she and the dog practically pinned to the ground and they had to hide in a grove of pine trees for about 20 minutes before it would leave them alone so that they could walk home. Very fierce birds!

Speaking of fierce birds, we get barn swallows in our stable each summer. We used to have a barn cat when we kept livestock. The cat never bothered the swallows, but it did like to sit on top of the gatepost at the barn while it washed itself. The swallows would see the cat and start diving at it and hitting it with their wings until the cat would fall off of the gatepost. Rather amazing how even a small bird can put the run on something much larger than itself.
