Croc, you guys have the best lumber in the world. But we've got a "world class" hog industry, so I'm not too sympathetic on this one. I hear the Chinese have been shopping around in Canada, may they'll buy it. Why Canadian farmers would base a business on selling pork to a bunch of lard-butt Americans who have to borrow money to pay for it is beyond me! <g>

Well, interesting about the pork production. I have to wonder why anyone would even bother raising pork, especially up here, and especially as energy prices climb. I have a couple of friends who had large hog operations back before the last energy price crunch. They got out around that time. Corn prices skyrocketed as there's so much energy cost that goes into production of corn. And the cost of heating/ventilation/cooling their barns was staggering. Meanwhile, cost of hogs just kept dropping until a lot of people left the industry. There are nowhere near the number of hog operations in my area as there were before the last energy price crunch, and I can pretty much guarantee they'll be even fewer after this one. From an environment point of view, I suppose I can't say I'll be too sad to see that, because I'm well aware of the impact that mega-sized factory hog operations have on the land and rivers. However, from the point of view of the farming community, it will be just one more nail in the coffin.
