I think if the parties kept everything the same but swapped positions on abortion, that is, if the Democrats decided that life begins at conception and the unborn should be protected, while Republicans decided to support the right to have partial birth abortions on demand, that enormous chunks of the party faithful would switch parties.

Very few feminists are also pro-life. Very few Christian fundamentalists support abortion on demand. It's the biggest wedge issue. Far bigger than gay marriage. Far bigger than immigration. Far bigger than Iraq.
