No, it's not an insult, unless the person being classified is offended, which is always possible.


A lot of the commentary on this incident focused on the insult aspect in addition to the fair-game aspect of it. I imagine that's why the insult spin is being defended. I agree with you that it's not an insult and it's stupid to treat it as such. But it's not stupid to defend in the context in which you are attacked.
