You are very wrong about your belief. I have researched this topic for client. Here are the facts.

1. In marriage if one spouse has medical benefits they are passed along.
2. IN marriage pension is passed along to remaining spouse as well as Social Security.
3. Property owned is passed along without taxes.
4. Wife or husbands have rights in medical to not only make decisions but be present.

The other side:

If two people own a home together and one dies the other must pay taxes on half of property.

No inheriting Social Security, Pension benefits or health benefits.

The partner in a relationship has no medical rights. In the case I worked on the parents of one partner denied visitation to the partner of 15 years. Positively kept them out from not only visiting but threw them out of home as they said their child owned it... which was not true. Partner also has no say in medical decisions.

NO RECOURSE to any of the above.

This is why I see gays wanting the benefits afforded to heterosexuals... Whatever it is called. You challenged me on a name. I am more concerned with civil rights...Call it marriage, civil union ...whatever. It's the equality that I am concerned about.
