but if you can compartalmentalize (aside: if you get the drift - these senior moments are killing me - the synapses are not functioning) instead of mixing it all up, you are a lot better off.

Speaking from personal experience, I've always found that if I readily admit that I've been a jerk about something, it's a lot easier to live with myself than if I try to "compartmentalize" it. That to me is another way of trying to rationalize lousy behavior. A suppressed conscience has a nasty way of popping out, maybe in bad dreams, when your subconscious intrudes on your pleasant compartmentalized mind.
