How clueless can Kerry be? Expect this clip to be played about a thousand times across America today. Says the Washington Post in its lead sentence in its lead story: "President Bush has emerged from the debates holding a slender lead over Sen. John F. Kerry, and despite the Democratic nominee's strong performances, the nationally televised confrontations did not significantly change the way voters view the two candidates, according to a new Washington Post survey." This is where you want to be, and with the wind at his back, Bush's speech in New Jersey yesterday hit exactly the right notes on the war. It needs to be fought hard and far from our shores, and it cannot be waged by a man who has not supported any war since he began his opposition to Vietnam in 1971. And add to message of resolve on the crucial issue of the election, a sudden unveiling of the real inner Kerry --nasty, willing to punch low, fear mongering on the draft and social security-- plus the stories on Democratic voter fraud are adding up up in the public's mind: the DNC/Kerry-Edwards manual; the rotten registrations done for crack-cocaine in Ohio; the requests for hundreds of thousands of extra ballots in Milwaukee. Americans don't like cheaters, and the cheating from the Kerry side is getting very obvious. Then there are the 9/11 Democrats, described by Brendan Miniter this morning, and the black votes that Bush will gather up, described by Harry R. Jackson. And a highly motivated evangelical community. There are many dynamics favoring Bush, and the only negative out there is the weird and sometimes wild swinging in the polls. Keep in mind that they were way off in charting GOP strength in 2002 --because they haven't figured out the way to poll in a post 9/11 world. It is that simple. Now a pro-Bush 527 is launching an ad that reminds the American voter of how the president acted in the aftermath of 9/11. A pro-Kerry 527 is running a despicable ad arguing that blacks will have their votes suppressed as in the days of the civil rights movement, and uses a picture of a fire-hose turned on blacks. Voters can see the choice between Bush and Kerry in the choice between these two ads. As the symposium entries point out again and again, it is a very easy choice indeed. hughhewitt.com
