How often did you hear the term "human rights" or have explained to you the common law tradition when you were growing up? Most Americans would fail the citizenship test required of immigrants, I doubt they could explain what the common law was.

Somehow or another, the Japanese and Germans, with highly authoritarian cultures, were able to democratize sufficiently that they were pretty well- functioning societies about ten years after their defeat in WWII. The truth is, we are not sure what is necessary and what is not in pursuing a democratic system, and, in any event, even a quasi- authoritarian system with some civil liberties and some participation in government is better than an complete, brutal dictatorship, by anyone's measure, except those profiting from the thuggery.

i am not advocating invading countries to force them to install our ideas of democracy or capitalism. i definitely don't want to insist they have our rules re smoking, affirmative action, sexual harassment.
i just want to stop their killing, suicide bombing, preaching of hatred. i want the people to stop it. they should do what is necessary to stop it. they shouldn't support the religious leaders who preach hate. or they may choose to be killed by us-that is their choice. thus far- they have not been forced to make that choice- and they have not acted strenuously against the terrorists.
