My mother and grandmother would not wear makeup on Sundays and wore scarves (they called them bandanas) on their heads. The older women in the Stans, Yugoslavia and Russia remind me of them.

It was like a miracle when the blue laws were lifted & malls opened almost 24/7 dotted the landscape. Restaurants in PA Amish country are still closed on Sunday. Life has stood still for them, to a certain extent. Although, they find ways to skirt cultural restrictions. A friend lives few doors down from an Amish family that started a small business. They're forbidden to have modern office equipment in their residence, so my friend keeps their scanner & fax at her home.<g>
