s2-

that's a good post and it raises good questions
for software users and sellers.

software is NOT a utility of depleting resources...

however, that pricing structure can spread the
cost of development to the consumer over time
and is an option to consider... it can let small
businesses get into something that will be of
increasing benefit as they grow without being
prohibitive in initial costs.

another consideration however is the fact that
much early software is buggy and should be classified
as beta or even alpha (prototype)...

AND...

many of the software developers, in efforts to find
more revenue sources, have made more advanced versions
of their software too invasive and intrusive.

there are many more steps to go through in software
development and marketing before the right pricing
solutions are found...

i believe that eventually the market will work this out...

as long as there are government controls to counter
monopolistic abuses.

(just rambling thoughts - any suggestions welcome)

Re: The software industry has been pushing subscriptions on the grounds that they will be cheaper for enterprises

As Al Franken would say, in Noo Yawk people will read this and say, "whozz u tink u foolin?" and in Minnesota they'll be saying: "Oh, no you don't!"
