Ann - yes I saw Harrison Fords comedy. It certainly did not represent the true Amish community. Actually, the Amash are very Maternal. The older female rules with the exception of religion. The example I gave is FAR from unusual. Do a little research and see how many pre-teen children are severly injured or killed working the farms & sawmills. At one time, long ago, they had many craftsmen. Now it is hard to find any that can do anything other than labor. Inbreeding has taken a huge toll. They have been known to bring partners in from other states when the situation becomes too horrible even for them. They have no outlet for their dairy products as they cannot come close to meeting sanitation or safety standards so they usually have milk bought by cheese factorys. Think twice about eating anything they produce except raw farm goods you are going to clean very well yourself.
