To get most of the oxide off without polishing off silver put your silver in a glass or Pyrex bowl. Add boiling water, baking soda, pinch of salt and a sheet of aluminum foil. Cover and let sit for an hour. The silver will be silver and the foil will look like a toxic waste dump.

I have the perfect solution...give your silver to the kids...that's what I just did. It's now their head ache. I reminded them they were heirlooms so they won't throw them away.
