Right on vietnam but wrong on iraq. You doth extrapolate too much. However doesnt rummy remind you of macnamara. For both their reputations as managers preceded them. And they both were in denial for so long. When rummy is older he too will publish a mea culpa book but as with mac it will be too late. Time to change teams even if it is like nixon for lbj. You may not get all you want from Chuck Hagel or John McCain as secy defense but it will be better than this gang. Mike

Perhaps half a million Americans assigned to the job of killing millions of Vietnamese

Not a single American was "assigned to the job of killing millions of Vietnamese". Nor where the half a million (at a time at the peak, more overall) collectivly assigned any such job.

there is now a country called Vietnam in which the people of Vietnam now go about their daily lives and where they will determine their own future -- they will not turn to us and ask us to send in our troops to impose our vision of how Vietnam should be run.

There used to be a country called South Vietnam, which turned to the US to assist in the effort to keep the troops of the North from imposing their vision of how Vietnam should be run.
