Look at it this way, McCarthy wrecked several hundred lives and careers with his witch hunts. The rightwingers are out to demonize the 49.5% of the population that doesn't vote for Bush, assuming Bush wins this time.

I spent the weekend in Johannesburg, where most people have put aside politics and started to focus again on jobs and houses and vacations and all that real stuff.

America is a much more radically politically divided place than South Africa now. It's the difference between the politics of reconciliation and deliberate division.

Shrub the Uniter, what a joke.

McCarthy destroyed lives. Having lived through that era I can tell you that anytime a person was called before the House on American Activities .. which was chaired by McCarthy.. (one of my parent's friends sat on it ) they were immediately thought of.. by most Americans, as guilty.

It didn't matter whether they were or not. There was a famous list of Hollywood producers and writers who were forever denied work. Some fled to Europe to try to resurrect their broken careers. Charlie Chaplin was one..

McCarthy,Cohn,Shine were demagogues.. AND irony of it all.. Cohn who was so anti gay died of AIDS.. He himself was gay.
Talk about hypocrisy.
